Depletion Of Flora And Fauna:

Human are themselves responsible for depletion of their forests and wildlife. They transformed nature for obtaining resource directly and indirectly from the forests like wood,leaves, rubber, medicines, dyes, food, fuel, fodder, manure etc and wildlife.

Factors Responsible for Depletion of Forest and Wildlife:

Following are the main factors which are responsible for depletion of forest and wildlife

(i)  Development During Colonial Period :

 During colonial period, railway network. agricultural, commercial and scientific forestry and mining activities expanded. This caused a great damage to Indian forests. The colonial government promoted the growth of a few species only which was termed as enrichment plantation. e.g. natural forests in South India are damaged by teak monoculture and Himalayan oak forests, and Rhododendron forests are replaced by Chir Pine (Rinaus roxburghii).

(ii) Agricultural Expansion :

 After independence,agricultural expansion became the major cause of depletion of forest resources. According to the Forest Survey of India, over 26200 sq km of forest area was converted into agricultural land between 1951 and 1980.
